06 Nov 2013 And then there was Dog.

Lucy the Cat left us on August the 20th, 2013. Both John and I were lost. She took pieces of us that we didn’t even know we had.

We wandered a bit through the next few weeks, and on September the 8th we found ourselves in Union Square—connecting with other lost souls, adoptable dogs and cats at ‘Adoptapalooza’. And there was Coraline (or rather, Gretta as she was then known).

We weren’t there to adopt. Of course we would eventually, but it was too soon—we just wanted to hang with the animals. To connect. To feel better about the world without Lucy.

But then there was Coraline. We saw her from a little ways away. Let’s go meet her, I said. What do you think, should we adopt? John said.

That’s how it all went down.

Three days later, on September 11th—paperwork complete, references checked, all veterinarian-ing done: Coraline the Dog, the Dutch Shepherd mix, bounded into our apartment and took over our lives.

She was (is) positively beautiful—it was the first thing we noticed. We were taken (when we first met) with her gentle, calm demeanor—which was a mask, we discovered, for our goofy, energetic, love-bug. She is warm, smart and loving and we had no idea what a perfect match she would turn out to be. We are so lucky.
